From foul tips to a hitter's backswing, being a catcher means putting yourself in harm's way all game long. Catcher's gear sets have the protective pieces you need to make sure you're as safe as can be when you're behind the plate. Leg guards shield against errant bounces and throws, while a baseball chest protector keeps your body safe against impacts. Helmets are available in the classic 2-piece style or the newer, hockey goalie style that offers better protection and less-obstructed vision. If your child wants to play baseball and "don the tools of ignorance", be sure to look at youth catcher's gear sets that are sized down to provide the same protection without being too cumbersome.
Hitters can step to the plate with protective gear on, as well. An elbow guard helps shield your arm if the pitcher decides to throw inside on you, while a leg guard provides protection from curveballs and sliders with a little too much spin on them. If your hands are sore from the vibrations of the bat after contact, be sure to pick up a pair of batting gloves and wrist guards that keep your hands and forearms stabilized when you're at-bat.
