First Step: Check Your League's Bat Rules
Before you look at any bat, the most important step is to know your league’s specific rules. Using a non-approved bat can get your player disqualified. The two most common governing bodies for youth baseball are USA Baseball and the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA). Bats are clearly marked with their certification stamps.
USA Baseball Bats
Bats with the 'USA' stamp are approved for play in leagues that follow USA Baseball standards. This includes Little League Baseball, Dixie Youth Baseball, and others. These bats are designed to perform like wood bats to ensure a more uniform and traditional style of play. They help develop skills by rewarding players for making solid contact.
USSSA Youth Bats
Bats with the 'USSSA' stamp are built for a higher level of performance. They are often called 'hotter' out of the wrapper and can hit the ball farther than USA bats. USSSA bats are used in many competitive or travel ball leagues. Always confirm with your coach or league official which standard is required before you buy.

The difference is performance. USSSA-approved bats are designed for a higher level of performance, or a 'hotter' feel. USA Baseball bats have a wood-like performance standard. You must check your league’s rules to know which certification stamp is required.
A quick way to measure is to have your child stand with the bat's knob in the center of their chest, pointing outward. If they can comfortably reach the end of the bat barrel with their fingertips, it's a good length. We cover more detailed sizing methods below.

They are ready to use right out of the wrapper with no break-in period needed. They also perform well in all weather conditions and are typically more affordable. The trade-off is that they can have a smaller 'sweet spot' and more vibration on miss-hits.
Composite Baseball Bats
Composite bats are made from layered carbon fiber materials. Their biggest advantages are a larger sweet spot and less sting or vibration in the hands on contact. This can boost a young player’s confidence. However, they are more expensive and require a break-in period of 150-200 hits to reach peak performance. They also perform best in warmer weather.
