Magellan Outdoors™ Hickory Handle Axe

Insane valueI don't know why I was so surprised that this axe was made with such great quality. I should know by now that in general, Magellan products are made to be inexpensive, but with high quality. I'd already been doing research into what to look for in an axe when my friend presented this one to me as a gift. As I started examining it, I realized it was spectacular!
The handle: as long as you get a handle with the grain aimed the right way, this handle should last quite a while. I don't know if it's heartwood or sapwood, but either way, the hickory will surely last way longer than I'd expect for $13.
The head: this is really the thing to pay attention to in axes; the handle can be replaced easily. The head on this axe seems to be good, strong steel, and I've seen others say it holds up well. The grind seems to be just right for an axe, too. It's not too sharp and not too blunt. In the few tests I've done, it's cut right into the wood, and I don't think I'd have trouble with most tasks.
The seating: in a lot of axes, the handle is seated poorly--even in axes that cost three times as much! In this one, however, it's seated incredibly well, with a perfectly shaped shaft, well-placed wedge, and two metal spacers. Every part of that handle touches every part of that metal. It's not slipping out any time soon. The only thing that would make it better is wider cheeks on the head, but I'm not complaining.
The smell: I don't know if it's the wood glue they use or moisture left in the packaging when it's sealed, but both of the Magellan axes I've smelled (my friend got one for himself after seeing how good mine was) have smelled like a wash rag that's been left on the sink too long. I'm a super smeller, though, so unless you're one, too, you probably won't be able to tell. My friend couldn't.
The grain: not all of the handles I saw in the store had the grain facing the right way. Some were almost perpendicular. Those handles will probably break a lot sooner. Having said that, it's not a huge deal because for $13, you're getting a spectacular head, and it can be rehandled easily for no great cost. Just look for the grain if you get one and make sure it's aligned with the direction of the head. If you order online and can't check first, take heart: even the handles with perpendicular grain will last quite a while. You'll likely get many many great camping trips out of them.
Verdict? Get it. For $13, you're getting a comfortable axe that puts those metal and fiberglass axes to shame. There's no reason not to get this wonderful axe.

has a purpose for sureHandle seemed firm still after the first 4 inch branch I cut up while camping and it was reliable 12 days into the camping trip..easy enough for a proper trained 12 year old to the woman in your life..handle gets dirty looses it's new look rather quick but the blade stayed sharp..you don't want your axe too sharp but right out the box it's perfect..wear gloves..my palm would a thanked me..
