Please read from someone that actually fishes! The gear ratio is 4.7:1. It's incorrectly listed on the website. The rod is well built, albeit slight flimsy which is a plus for what it is intend for - pretty sensitive for a medium action rod. This is NOT a rod for hauling in 10lb fish! It's a great rod for the occasional "here's a great opportunity to fish!" stop while traveling.
Like most budget minded fishing combos, this is made in China where they just assemble stuff and ship it out. Take the time to do the following and I think you'll love this versatile little combination!
1. Strip off the line and put on some light 10lb braid or good 8 pound mono. (I love that line - super tough!)
2. Tighten everything BEFORE use. People that complain about stuff falling off is just the expectation that someone else actually checked all that stuff before you used it. Be smart. They don't check, and that's true for $200 reels, trust me.
3. Use it as it was intended. It isn't going to haul in a big fish unless you're smart about it. Wasn't made for that, so like for most things, usage as intended will yield good results.
This is a nice combo at a great price. academy stands behind the stuff they sell. Keep your receipt if you're not happy!

The rod is good the spin cast reel is junkI bought the Eagle Claw Rod and Spincast Reel combo for my son this week. The rod seems to be good for a telescopic but the reel is cheap and does not cast or reel in good. I would not buy this combo. I would buy the rod by itself and then get a Zebco 33 or some other spincast reel to go w/ it.
