Using fishing nets can be a fun and relaxing way to spend the day, but make sure you pick the right fishing net with which to haul in your catch. A cast net is thrown by hand out onto the water and hauled back in, hopefully with some bait fish! A landing net is used to secure fish that are caught while you use a fishing rod and reel, while bait nets are used to scoop up small bait fish, such as minnows. Each of these fish nets have a specific use, so be sure to select the one that fits your needs.
While it might seem counterintuitive, a bigger casting net isn't always better. A larger cast net will obviously be heavier and more cumbersome while hauling in, so if you're just starting to learn cast net fishing, a smaller fish net could be easier to learn on. Bigger nets are also more susceptible to tangles and rips if thrown near branches or reeds. If you're an experienced fisher and are in clear water, larger fish netting might suit your purposes, but if you're just starting out or are fishing in obstructed waters, a smaller net could be just as useful.
Fishing on the ocean can be tough on your gear. Salt water corrodes steel and wears down other material quickly, so be sure to look at the type of materials used and try to find corrosion-resistant equipment to help ensure long-lasting use.
