DEPENDABLE!!!!!!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Treypeterson2432 years agoI have owned my Ambassadeurs for nearly 10 years now and are still working and catching fish as if I just pulled them out of the box. They have helped me by being extremely versatile in how I use them, from whether I'm catching carp, using them to sling a crankbait, slow rolling a spinnerbait, or dragging a flounder up from the deep. I hope I never have to replace them, which I don't think I will have too, but if I do, I will for a fact, be buying them again, [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Very nice baitcaster
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.John in TX1 year agoWhat's not to like? Braking system easy to adjust, feels and works great, easy to cast. That is the only reason I returned my Motive reel was because they made the braking small plastic on/off too hard to adjust and after a few times of adjusting, the lip of the plastic pieces started to give way. On the Mettle, they are easy to adjust. Granted I don't constantly adjust the brakes but at times I do for the conditions. Anyway, the Mettle is fine by me. Pleasure to fish with.

Good, but price increase not justified.
This reviewer rated product 4 out of 5 stars.txangler4 years agoThis is the same exact reel as the original Mettle, but is slightly lower in profile. It is not as rounded on the side and is more oval/flat. This design change saved a few tenths of an oz in weight. Is it a good reel? Yes, one of the best at this price point. However, in my opinion, a 20% price increase doesn't justify the one improvement especially since it looks exactly the same. The color scheme or something else could have been changed IMO. BF deal at $29.99 is hard to beat. Would I ... purchase it at full price? Probably not unless I really needed/wanted a baitcast reel. Wait until they put these on sale. My guess it will be 39.99 now instead of 24.99-29.99 like the original Mettle.

Promax for life!!!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Wayne1 month agoI have 2 pro max and they out perform my 160$ Revo sx reel. Very smooth casting and retrieve with backlashing not being an issue anymore. I can set the breaking system to 20% or less on my pro max where my Revo has to be set to 50% or more. I love promax and they're worth a 160 reel price.

Deadly Budget Friendly Reel
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Mando20132 years agoThis is the perfect reel to get you started in the fishing scene. Slap this full of 20lb mono or 30 pound braid and youre ready to go. Gives 11 pounds of stopping power for those catfish or bull reds. If you set the spool tension correctly for the size of bait, it wont backlash/birdness. The braking system works excellent and the clicker is loud enough. The level wind awesome.. moves when casting and reeling in. I really don't have any complaints for this reel.

Ambassador 5500 & 6500
This reviewer rated product 4 out of 5 stars.Trae Miller2 years agoI bought four of these reels over a couple year span in the late 90's. These are by far the only reels that have stood the test of time! I use them for tight-lining for crappie, white bass, sauger, but mainly for catfish. I have landed several over 20 lbs and a couple in the 50 lb range. Thanks so much for producing such great reels! sincerely, Trae Miller [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Classic Winner right here!!!!!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Anonymous1 month agoThis reel is smooth as silk. I purchase two of them along with two vapor rods. The reels are very easy to dial in and I can cast them a long way. Jordan Lee won the classic with this combo and I missed out on a free hoodie shipped free by a couple weeks. Great purchase.

great reel
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.kipper2 months agoI have had this model since 2005 (5 of them) and they are still going. I have them cleaned and lubbed and replace a washer or 2. Incredible longevity for a guy that fishes 100 days/year. I just (2017) bought 2 new ones. So far I like them a lot! For the price this is the best casting reel on the market! I have a couple of "high end reels" but won't spend that much money again!

Best bait caster type crappie reel... Period
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Cwolf774 years agoThis reel has a true free spool unlike the other crappie reels out there. The release is on the top right of the reel instead of underneath like the others. The release works no matter what position the handle is in as well. It's a little heavier than other reels but it helps balance out the long rods. Some people comment that the line gets between the spool and the housing and that is because they put too much line on , only fill it to within 1/8 inch from full. I have used it with power ... pro braid as well as mono and have had no problems. It's my fav reel for use on my b&m ss rods.

Mini reels take some trial and error
This reviewer rated product 4 out of 5 stars.Fred074 years agoThe WMR5 is a more advanced, smoother-operating and better casting, version of Buck's Mini Reel and variations on the theme. The main problem with all mini reels is the gap between the spool and the reel housing, which line can get behind -- and then you have to take the reel apart. The Buck's Mini Reel and variations are pretty easy to take apart. This WMR5 is not quite as easy if you take the handle side apart, since you have to make sure you get the right sized screws in the holes when ... reassembling, and get the Star Drag washers in the right order; the side opposite the handle pops off easily with only three identical screws, if the line goes off that side. The various crappie rod and reel dealers all stock mini reels so somebody must have success with them. You have to consider that they are designed mainly as a line holder for a jigging or trolling rod. Casting is not really their forte, but this WMR5 does cast pretty well. Not like a spincast or spinning reel, but about what you'd expect from a basic baitcast reel. Some mini reel users have pointed out that you can avoid the problem of the line getting stuck between the spool and the reel housing by not filling the spool as full -- leave 1/8 inch of the spool showing. Also, heavier line might help. Many mini reels come spooled with 6lb line, but the WMR5 appears to come with 10lb line, although the description at Lew's says 6lb. I put Eagle Claw 8lb clear mono on my WMR5 and 2 other mini reels. The appeal of the WMR5 is its minimalism; if you grew-up fishing with a basic baitcasting reel that you had to "thumb" to control distance/backlash, you can probably relate to this reel. Also, you will manually guide the line when reeling in, since the reel has no "level-wind"; my hunch is that without the mechanical friction of a level-wind the reel actually casts BETTER. The WMR5 and other mini reels are versatile, mountable on most rods: baitcasting, spinning, ice-fishing, trolling/jigging, etc. I put the WMR5 on my Quantum QX24 6-foot medium action casting rod for general lake fishing for Bluegill and Bass. 1/8 oz jigs and larger lures cast easily. Anything lighter, like a feathered Grizzly Jig, try pulling out about 15 feet of line and flip the jig out onto the water -- a little like fly fishing. The WMR5 has a Star Drag, a clicker on/off, a spool release, and a spool tensioner. These are used in various combinations; for example, turn the clicker on and release the spool to pull line off the reel to attach a lure, to drop a sinker rig straight down into the water, or to flip a lightweight lure. To cast, turn the clicker off, put your thumb on the spool to keep it from freespooling, click the spool release with your other hand, and cast. The spool tensioner is generally set loose to allow for longer casts, but can be tightened depending on the lure weight to help with backlash (but your thumb is the main backlash deterrent). The Star Drag, of course, helps to avoid line breakage by providing a little "give" to the fish. List price is $25.99. Try to get it on Sale and have fun!

Fantastic Reel!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Thomas773 years agoCasts light lures very well which is a quality that's hard to find. Superb ergonomics and cast quality. Magnetic brakes are nice and strong and have a very linear adjustable range from weakest to strongest. May be the best sub $100 BC reel out there.

Great Reel
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.castnblast172 years agoBought it for my spinnerbait/chatterbait rod and the 6.3:1 ratio is absolutely perfect. I probably made 500 casts with it in a day and cranked 3lb bass through grass with ease. Casts a mile and can really yank a fish through thick cover.

Light weight work horse and smooth
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Bowedup3 years agoI have been fishing the Gulf coast for over 20 years and this is by far the best reel I have ever used. It casts great, has an awesome drag system, and as smooth as butter on warm toast. The quality of this reel is way above the other highend saltwater baitcasters.

This Dude is for reel ya'll!!!!!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.This____Thick1 year agoOK, this reel is unbelievable! Casting it is smoother than an ocean of lotion!!! 22lbs of drag feel more like 61 all day! I only fish artificial baits, but this reel would probably sling a mud minnow a 1/4 mile or so. Whether you're cashing $150,000 Dollar checks or tooling around with your Bros in a pack of yaks! Do yourself a favor and buy in to the hype.

Casts to Infinity and beyond!
This reviewer rated product 5 out of 5 stars.Jcfd1421 month agoThs first time I took this reel fishing at my farm pond, my lure hit 10 on the bank on the other side! This was not possible with my older Curado. It really casts a country mile once adjusted to your casting style. Lews is a good company who answers the phone and are helpful.
