Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great reel for Surf Casting This is my second conventional casting reel. I started with the SQL15 star drag but have surpassed its abilities, so now I’m using the SQL30LD. I have been using conventional reels for surf fishing for almost two years now and I love them immensely. I wish I started using those years ago. The Penn Squall SQL30LD is a great conventional reel for surf fishing. I have it matched with a Penn Prevail 12’ Heavy Surf Casting Rod (PRESF2040C12). It took some practice to get used to not having the magnetic break if the SQL15 but in the end I can cast it much farther. I can now cast further than ever. In fact I’m hitting the 200 to 210 mark frequently and on occation reach 230 yards. I have measured this using 6 oz. of weight and a line counter. I use it for surf fishing along the Atlantic coast as well as for grouper fishing from the Sunshine Skyway Pier in Tampa. It handles both with ease. I have landed a grouper of 18 lbs. and a Sand Shark of 45 lbs. with no issues. I love how loud the bait clicker is. One suggestion would be to use a leather thumb guard on the casting hand on the reel. Controlling the spool to prevent backlash can cause burns, at least in the beginning while you are learning. I highly recommend this reel and the rod I have it mounted on. I think another one is in my future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT INVESTMENT!!!!! I went out last year for bluefish. On two trips I caught nothing using the gear supplied on the boat. I bought this reel and I am truly satisfied! I have a bad back. I went out for striped bass today out of Captree and while everyone else had a fight reeling in their fish, I did it with ease. It was like I was reeling in a minnow. The only fight I had was with my bad back. After the fish got on the boat, other fishermen came over to me because I was in pain. I told them reeling in the fish was easy. The mate told them I have the BMW of reels. My back was the only problem. Great investment!!!!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Best for Bottomfishing and Trolling I love the spinfisher, battle 2, and the fathom, but this reel is different. 2 of the three reels I purchased had the drags break while fighting big 20-30lb yellowtails. I returned them for a new pair of squalls and decided that they simply couldn't handle that much drag (20lbs) and now use them for rockfishing or trolling for small bonitos or yellows. In replacement for the squalls I bought the fathom 30. Great reel which I recommend for yellowtail fishing as the squall is best for rockfishing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome line capacity I bought this reel couple months ago second-hand but it was never used still in the box. And I have always wanted one. When I got it spooled up I put on the Diawa saltiga braid 40lb and if ended up with 800m of braid. And just in time for the snapper season [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong and Simple Reel This reel is very strong and capable. I lined my squall 50 with 65 pound braid and pulled 20+ pound red snapper and 40-60 pound amberjack into the boat without a problem. This reel can do anything it's operator is capable of. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough Saltwater reel! Bought this reel for striped bass and it has performed very well on the inshore troll. Can't go wrong with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible versatility This reel has no problem whipping 40-50lb YFT into submission. The reel's lightweight makes it perfect for pitching a bait to a shark or white marlin.
