Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worthless I bought a 10 pack of these things last year thinking they would help me out when the temperatures dropped into the 30-40's. I'll be totally honest and say that I'm a complete cold wuss. With that said, I can keep fairly warm on my own sitting around in the 50's with reasonable clothes. Below that, I need some help. When the first pack last year didn't work, I figured it was a bad batch so I bought another 10 pack this year for a ski trip. Well it was between 20-35° the three days I was skiing and these things were worthless as well. So wondering why these things are still being sold, I did a test. Inside my house at 72°, these hand warmers will heat up to about 115° in 60-90 minutes. That feels nice applied directly to the skin which you’re apparently not supposed to do, but that's at 72° and well above the point where I would actually need these things. After they warmed up, I decided to stick one outside in 28° temperatures and leave the other inside as a test. I left the one pack outside for 45 minutes and it was 65° when I brought it back in. 65° seems reasonable but it would certainly not warm up my hands or feet if it was even the slightest bit chilled already and when grabbing a pack even at 85°, it feels cool to the touch. After 15 minutes, the pack was back up to 102° and in 30 minutes it was up to 110° the other pack left inside was up to 120°. Once warmed up, I put a pack back outside for 10 minutes and it was back to 65°. Add wind and it’s even worse. Bottom line is…the packs do warm up if they’re kept warm but if it’s cold, they can’t generate enough heat to stay warm. Maybe these will work if you can generate enough heat on your own to keep them warm or are just sitting around and can leave them in an insulated coat pocket but I can’t. For me that defeats the whole point of having a warming pack. If I could wear a big enough jacket to do my activities when it’s cold or could leave my hands in my pockets, I wouldn’t need these things in the first place. Guess I’ll have to start looking into battery powered heating pads.
