    Company History

    Academy Sports + Outdoors is one of the nation's largest sporting goods and outdoor stores. It is currently owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co L.P. (together with its affiliates, "KKR"), a leading global investment firm, and led by CEO and President Rodney Faldyn. Prior to August 2011, the company was owned by the Gochman Family and led by Chairman and CEO David Gochman. David's grandfather, Max Gochman, started Academy Sports + Outdoors over 70 years ago when he opened Academy Tire Shop in 1938 in San Antonio, Texas. After a few years, Max began selling military surplus, and the store continued to evolve into what it is now — a premier sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer with a broad assortment of high-quality hunting, fishing and camping equipment and gear along with sports and leisure products, footwear, apparel and much more. Over the last several decades, the company has grown substantially from its small beginnings. Sales reached one billion dollars in 2004 and two billion dollars in 2007. Today, annual sales exceed $3.5 billion.

    Company History Timeline

    1938 - Academy Sports + Outdoors traces its roots to 1938 when founder Max Gochman opened the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, Texas.
    1939 - Academy Tire Shop begins selling military surplus.
    1945 - Max changes store name to "Academy Super Surplus".
    1956 - Max moves his business to Austin, Texas and expands to four stores.
    1973 - Max's son Arthur Gochman purchases Southern Surplus Sales in Houston and changes its name to "Academy Corp." Arthur opens six Academy Super Surplus stores in Houston.
    1978 - Arthur stops practicing law, devotes his time to Academy, and moves the corporate office to Houston.
    1980s - Academy introduces sports and outdoors items including fishing, camping and sporting goods to its product assortment.
    1981 - Academy moves into new offices and a 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse.
    1983 - Academy runs its first multi-page newspaper advertisement during the holiday.
    1984 - Athletic brands are added to the Academy product assortment.
    1988 - Academy opens its first "big box" stores of 35,000-40,000 sq. ft.
    1990 - Academy Sports + Outdoors purchases its current corporate office and distribution center at 1800 N. Mason Road in Katy, Texas. Company grows to 28 stores across Texas.
    1991 - Academy exits military surplus business. Sales reach $100 million.
    1994 - Academy expands beyond Texas to Edmond, Oklahoma and Lafayette, Louisiana.
    1995 - Company changes its name to "Academy Sports + Outdoors".
    1996 - David Gochman, Arthur's son and Max's grandson, becomes president and CEO. Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first Alabama location.
    1998 - Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first Florida location.
    1999 - Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first Tennessee and Mississippi store locations. Sales reach $500 million.
    2000 - Academy Sports + Outdoors opens 50th store location in Temple, Texas. Sales reach $1 billion.
    2003 - Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first Arkansas location.
    2005 - Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first Missouri and Georgia locations.
    2006 - Academy Sports + Outdoors employs over 10,000 associates across the Southeast. The company opens first 100,000 sq. ft. store.
    2007 - Rodney Faldyn is named as President. Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first
    South Carolina location. Sales reach $2 billion.
    2009 - Academy Sports + Outdoors adds a second distribution facility in Twiggs County, GA.
    2011 - Academy Sports + Outdoors is acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co L.P. (together with its affiliates, "KKR"), a leading global investment firm.  Rodney Faldyn is named CEO and President.  The company also launches academy.com as a full eCommerce retail site.
    2012 - Academy Sports + Outdoors opens its first North Carolina and Kansas locations.
    Today - Academy Sports + Outdoors operates over 160 stores in 13 states with 21,000+ associates throughout the Southeast. The company is led by CEO and President Rodney Faldyn.

    California Transparency in Supply Chains Act (SB 657)

    Academy, Ltd. d/b/a Academy Sports + Outdoors ("Academy") is committed to developing and maintaining an international supply chain that is free from slavery, human trafficking, and child labor.

    To this end, Academy's Global Sourcing Guidelines and Code of Vendor Conduct, Ethics and Code of Conduct Policy, and Terms and Conditions of Purchase (collectively, "Compliance Requirements") each incorporate standards to ensure its international supply chain is free from slavery, human trafficking, and child labor. The Compliance Requirements apply to Academy's Vendors, manufacturing contractors, approved sub-contractors, and other business partners, and to all goods sourced by Academy. They require vendors to comply with the law and prohibit vendors from engaging in slavery, human trafficking, and child labor.

    Vendor Certification & Acknowledgement:

    Academy expects and relies on its vendors to comply with the law and to provide merchandise to Academy that is fully compliant with the law. Vendors of goods sourced and imported by or for Academy are required to complete a Manufacturer’s Certificate certifying that they do not participate in slavery, human trafficking, and child labor and that the materials used in the products purchased by Academy comply with the laws regarding slavery, human trafficking, and child labor of the country or countries where the vendors do business.

    Compliance Monitoring Through Risk-based Assessments and Audits:

    Academy uses several mechanisms, such as audits and scheduled and unscheduled on-site inspections of production facilities, to monitor compliance with the Compliance Requirements.

    Non-Compliance:

    Academy may take several types of actions against vendors found to be in violation of the Compliance Requirements, including but not limited to canceling purchase orders, severing Academy’s relationship with the vendor, reporting the vendor to the appropriate authorities, and seeking indemnity and/or damages.

    Training:

    Academy provides training on the Compliance Requirements to its vendors via written policies and materials, a vendor dedicated website, and vendor conferences. Academy provides training on the Compliance Requirements to its associates via written materials and policies, webinars, and internal/external seminars.

    Academy is committed to developing and maintaining an international supply chain that is free from slavery, human trafficking, and child labor, and its Compliance Requirements reflect this commitment.     A cornerstone of the Academy Sports + Outdoors philosophy is active community support and grassroots involvement. The company has a long history of giving back to local communities via partnerships with sports teams, youth organizations and outdoors and conservation programs that began with its founder. This community participation shows that Academy Sports + Outdoors cares about its associates, customers and the local communities where it does business.

    Sponsorships

    Academy Sports + Outdoors evaluates all sponsorship proposals to determine if they meet the company’s goals, needs and business objectives. All requests will be carefully evaluated against detailed criteria such as target audience, benefits and budget limitations.

    To make the greatest possible impact with our available resources, we currently support sponsorship proposals that meet the following general guidelines:

    • Proposals are submitted at least three months in advance of the event to allow enough time for review and fulfillment.
    • Sponsorship opportunities offer category exclusivity – industry/product.
    • Sponsorship opportunities take place within one of Academy Sports + Outdoors' regions. Academy Sports + Outdoors' regions span across eleven states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
    • Sponsorship opportunities focus on sports or outdoor-related events or promotions.
    • Sponsorship opportunities are for a collective group (i.e. sports association, league, school district, etc.) rather than for an individual, travel team, or individual sports team.

    Donation Requests

    Academy Sports + Outdoors reserves funds to support qualifying organizations with 501(c)3 tax status, schools, leagues, conservation and other select youth focused groups. As an active member of the community with a grassroots focus, we always receive more requests than we can fulfill. As a result, we put guidelines in place that allow us to support pillars that are aligned with our brand, associates and customers. One of our filters includes religious and political organizations so our contributions do not favor one faith or one political party over another. Our focus is on families regardless of their position of faith or political views.

    Donation requests are reviewed by Academy Sports + Outdoors from our headquarters location, so please do not submit them to any of the regional mailboxes.  Regional mailboxes are reserved for local sponsorship proposals and in-store sign-up/registration requests.

    In-Store Registrations/Sign-Ups

    Academy Sports + Outdoors regularly hosts in-store registrations/sign-ups for various community organizations and events including sports leagues, fishing and shooting tournaments, camping events and walk/run events. To promote in-store registration/sign-up events, Academy will provide publicity assistance as we are able.

    In-store registration/sign-up requests must meet the following general guidelines in order to be considered:

    • Requests are submitted at least three months in advance of the in-store registration/sign-up date.
    • Requests include the Academy Sports + Outdoors store location to host the registration/sign-up (Academy stores are located in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas).
    • In-store registration/sign-up opportunities focus on sports or outdoor related events.
    • A primary and a secondary in-store registration/sign-up date is provided, as only one organization per store, per day is permitted to participate in an in-store registration/sign-up event.
    • Organization will provide the staff for the in-store registration/sign-up event.
