Very nice easy to use reel.I have been fishing a long time and use a number of different size Zebcos plus other gear. I wanted to try two of these big ones so I got an 808 Salt Water and an 888. This casts well lures around 1/2 to 3/4 ounce or bait chunking, heavier plugs should use a conventional or spinning set. 808 is fine for brackish river fishing and easily handled a 16-17 lb striper, 888 is no good in saltish water the handle bearing and internal cast disk rusts up right away where the 808 doesn't. I cleaned and oiled it up so it will be fine for cats and carp but nothing in salt. So basically 888 for fresh water only, also I think 15lb line would be great if you don't need the 25, the 20lb on the 808 Salt is a good match.

King of the spincastThis has been the king of the spincast for along time.Berkley at one time made the Fussion spincast it came close but it is gone , and there are only a few who venture in to this market,Shakespeare's Ti 20. South Bends Proton 40 and there R2F Catfish 40,and the Zebco's 808 Magnum, but now its gone,so this makes Zebco with the runnner ups the new 808, new 808 Salt fisher, new 808 bow fisher, all of this are good reels,Zebco may come in second with the 808 Salt Fisher. the TI 20 does have 2 ball bearings and 2 pinup pins, and this is a good reel ,i do not think it would beat the 808 saltfisher, but none of these can beat The new 888 it is still the King. the plus on the new zebco's, is the new release button and they are made to use braid this adds up when fishing for large fish where you can use braid, but braid is also changing to be used in many types of fishing. most large spincast is used for large catfish, and 50lb to 80 lb braid on these reels steps up there usefulness .So wear the Crown Zebco 888 ,you are the King.

Are the 888 gears metal? Which Zebco reel is the most durable for frequent pond fishing large ( 10 lb to 35 lb catfish?
Asked by: stevehiebert
The Zebco 888 Spincast Reel Convertible features a thumb button that's anchored to the body of the reel for a much more solid feel, plus a hardier anti-reverse system. The 888 reel can be used for fishing large species like blue catfish and even muskies. The spool has been modified to create a non-slip surface for anglers who often use braided line. The drag system has been improved to cover a wider range of drag settings and the snub-off component has been enhanced to allow anglers to cast heavy lures or lead without fear or frustration or slippage occurring on the cast. The uniquely designed T-ring greatly reduces the fishing line's ability to travel behind the spinnerhead of the 888. The 888 features a 2.6:1 Power Drive, is stainless-covered and features 25 pound test line with a large stamped stainless Power T handle.
