Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this reel I bought the 1000 size reel for my light rod and this reel can handle some big fish. For the most part I've use Shimano reels but this is a much better reel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for the splash zone Well built reel but it is not meant for surf fishing in the splash zone. If it gets splashed, which it will, it jams up. I have experienced this twice and have twice taken it apart, cleaned and regreased it. Sand gets into it and it also seems that the Penn grease reacts with the seawater and gels up. If you are not going to get it splashed you should be fine. For surf fishing buy the Spinfisher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Reel for a Great Price! I really wanted a reasonably priced spinner for some local bass and halibut fishing and the Penn Battle caught my eye. I recently purchased the 4000 Model and couldn't be happier with it. I was fishing the kelp this weekend for Calicos with this reel on 10-15lb old Penn rod with 12lb test and got hooked up with a 44lb White Sea Bass out of nowhere! Both products performed amazing over the 30 minute fight and I couldn't believe my eyes when this thing hit the deck, truly shows the capability of this reel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Up to the Battle! I'm a captain in South Padre Island and I use Penn Battle 2000. Two weeks ago I was able to to my clients on a 47 1/2" redfish that weighed 45lbs. i can say that the Penn Battle was up to the battle and won! Great, durable reels!

I'm considering purchasing this reel for surf fishing. What length surf rod would be recommended?

Asked by: Agave
Hello, Agave. For surf fishing, we prefer a 9' or a 10' rod. However, this is a preference and will really depend on what you like. If you're going to be holding your rod, we would suggest a smaller and lighter rod (9'-10') and if you plan on casting and setting the rod then you could probably go a bit longer.
