I am interested in purchasing a pair of high powered binoculars within the 200 range. I want to be able to see the moon up close. But I am not sure as to what then numbers stand for. I found some Nikons 10 x 42 but also found some 16x 35 which is better?

Asked by: omar617
Hello, omar617. The Nikon PROSTAFF 7S 10 x 42 Binoculars have a maximum magnification of 10x and a 42mm objective lens diameter whereas a 16 x 35 would have a greater magnification capability (of up to 16x) and a 35mm objective lens diameter. The larger the objective diameter, the greater the light-collecting power. This results in higher resolution and a brighter image, however; large-diameter objective lenses make binoculars bigger and heavier. An effective diameter for astronomical observation is suggested to be 50mm and over.
