Bought smoker in November of 2015 and after four months of usage, smoker started experiencing problems starting and shutting off for no apparent reason. Called Masterbuilt to inquire about replacement parts because I thought my warranty had expired. Customer Service indicated that warranty is 1 year instead of the 90 days stated in manual. Masterbuilt shipped me a replacement smoker which I received in less that 3 days after sending them photos showing that existing smoker had been ... decommissioned. Needless to say, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and the outstanding warranty support received from masterbuilt.
I have had my Masterbuilt for a year and love it. I cook for 50-75 people at every home Carolina Panther game and my smoker has always delivered. I recently smoked briskets when the outside temperature was 15 degrees. The smoker stayed at 225 the entire night. Just a great product!
Finally pulled the trigger after using a gas smoker for about 1.5 years. After reading reviews and the advice of my dad, I decided onthe the Old Country Pecos smoker and couldn't be happier. While there is a definitely a learning curve with using an offset smoker, this thing has put a smile on my face all three times I have used it. There are definitely mods that need done such as tuning plates and sealing, but I love this thing already. The only issue I have had is the firebox door didnt ... want to close after my first smoke, but that was nothing a few smacks with the hammer couldn't fix. This bad boy is awesome for the $$ spent!!
Bought this smoker in Feb-17. For the money, it was the best smoker I found on the market. Build quality is fairly good, with some slight defects in workmanship and design, but still a good compromise between Quality and price. Great $400 smoker. 1.)The gap lines between the door and the body being uneven or askew. 2.) The design of the smoker body has a thinner gauge steel than the smoker door. 3.) Does use a bit of wood/charcoal if you keep the fire door open and feed a good clean fire ... with lots of oxygen. 4.) Would love a second rack in the smoker to add a second layer of meats. 5.) Heavy duty, this thing has to be close to 200lbs you will need a truck with a ramp to move this bad boy. 6.) love the grill grate for the fire box, throw on some chicken wings with a single layer of hot coals in the box for some truely great wings. Academy Sports associate helped pick out a tight smoker, with almost no smoke leaks, A+ for his help. This is my first stick burner, and it has been fairly easy to use as long as you keep an eye on the fire. All that being said, it is all about results, and pictures speak a thousand words.
I have owned this smoker for about a month. I had been using a smoker box on my propane grill, but decided I was not getting that great smoke flavor. This smoker is the perfect size, has great features, and easy to use. The remote allows easy monitoring of box temperature, time and meat probe. I would recommend this smoker highly!!!
I purchased this unit on the recordation of a friend who had purchased a larger version. I've had it now for about 8 weeks and have smoked something every weekend since I purchased it. I have smoked Pork Butt, Salmon, Pork Chops, Chickens and even Smoked Lobster Mac & Cheese. All with great results. In fact I am finishing up the smoked butt as I am writing this review. Awesome! Easy to use and clean. I suggest a bus box with warm water and soap as soon as the smoker has cooled down. I would ... highly recommend this smoker..
I purchased this smoker and when I received it at my house I saw that the shipping company laid this 500lbs smoker on its side and shoved it in a van! The handles were all smashed in and the smoker was very scratched up. Needless to say I refused to accept the package. I sent it back with the delivery guy and called Academy to get them to ship me another one. Academy said they only could give me a full refund and then once I got the refund I would have to order a new one online. Well, the refund ... took about a month to get into my account. Once I finally got my refund I ordered a new one online. I got my confirmation email and called Academy to tell them to ship the smoker STANDING UP this time...they made a note of it and told me to call the shipping company as well. So, I did just that and told them that it CANNOT go into a van and must be shipped standing up and in a truck! I finally got my smoker and couldn't be happier with it. While the shipping and everything was a pain, the smoker its self is amazing. 1/4 inch thick steal and it is a beast! I have cooked about 4 times on it and everything comes out great. Its awesome at holding temps and the grates are expanded metal which makes for a great smoker for this price! Buy this smoker, but make sure you baby the 2 companies so they send it right the first time.
I've been waiting months to order this and finally got mine two weeks ago. My previous smoker was a WSM. This is nice, heavy and sturdy. It leaks a bit so I'll put some seal. Otherwise, really happy. Did a brisket on my first week end and just did ribs tonight and I never managed to make a brisket that good on a WSM (and this was my first try). I'm so happy.
I got this smoker as a gift and it works better than I expected. When I smoked a pork butt it had to be cut into three pieces to fit in the smoker. This product is great for the beginner and for experienced at smoking meats. I would recommend this product!
For the occasional smoker, it would be tough to beat this little unit, especially considering the cost. Not a bunch of fancy features, but well made and gets the job done.
We have owned our grill for almost 2 years. My husband loves it. The capacity is phenomenal. We have experienced no issue with the distance between the fire box and the smoker. The only problem we had was trying to find a cover to protect it from the weather. We ended up having to get a tarp and wrap it. It's not pretty but it works. We also had an issue with one of the thermometers however Academy Sports replaced it at no cost. We are extremely pleased with our purchase and look forward to ... having the grill for many years to come.
I have owned this smoker for a year. I have cooked tons of meat on it. I cooked turkeys, chickens, ribs, briskets, sausage, fish, steaks, corn and more. This was my first wood burner so I had a little learning curve about how to smoke but since I got it figured out I consistently make great BBQ and everyone loves coming over to eat. The capacity is awesome. This smoker holds heat great, I can usually smoke a brisket for 15 hours without having to reload the firebox. Only reason for the 4 star ... is I would rather them have left the top opening on the firebox off. It leaks quite a bit of smoke / heat. It is nice to be able to fire grill steaks but I think I may have a top welded on soon.
Im so glad i got this model. Perfect size!! Easy to transport.
I bought this 6 months ago and its been great but every time I smoke meat in it the meat starts to scream like its been brought back to life. Please fix
I bought this Saturday after my firebox on my cheap smoker had rusted out. I was very impressed for the first go around, and felt like it contained heat extremely well and was very easy to operate. Performed great on a pork butt, chicken wings, and ribs. Going to do a brisket next, now that its seasoned. Easily kept it at 215-230 for the first 7 hours and started tinkering with ventilation after adding too many pieces of wood and had a flare up due to user error. It quickly choked back down ... to a comfortable temperature range.
This is one well made smoker like the thought of a stand up one but never would have guessed I would be this impressed. 1st it built really well it doesn't leak much from the door which is really surprising, 2nd the fire box is big enough and so easy to operate and once again tight seal I didn't even see and smoke come from it
Absolutely love this smoker. Assembly was easy, took about 45 minutes. Listened to the suggestions others had on their reviews like using a larger cast iron pan and using wood chunks instead of chips. Glass on the door a plus to monitor the meat. Temperature gauge fairly accurate. Smoker is so simple to use, monitor, and food turns out great!
I got this smoker for Christmas. Looked online at several makes and models of smokers and decided this was the most economical. I have been smoking meat on a Master Forge charcoal grill and, despite reviews complaining of smoke leaking around the lid and poor craftsmanship, I enjoyed smoking indirectly on mine (still have it and use for grilling). The only problem was there wasn't enough room when cooking for a larger crowd, so I was looking for something bigger. My youngest son and I put it ... together in a little less than an hour. This included laying out all the parts, reading over all the instructions first (not very manly, I know), and then stopping for some general father/son talk. One thing I noticed on some older reviews was how people turned the unit upside down as a part of the assembly and the doors fell off. I guess they've added Step 1A because it reads, "Remove the doors..." I used a Craftsman cordless drill with the clutch set on 10 and made fairly quick work out of assembly. After assembly, I seasoned the smoker per the intructions. Because of other reviews I had read, I went ahead and bought an oven thermometer. This particular model had a small wood chip tray. Others beng reviewed showed a round chip PAN. This is where some had placed a round skillet to hold wood chunks (one guy suggested lava rock and placing wood chunks on top). All of this was done to combat flare ups. However, with this model, the chip tray didn't flare up. Smoke lasted about 30-40 minutes and I could easily add chips (Get a pair of heat resistant gloves-- much better for doing this). Unless you remove the water pan, I'm not sure there is enough room to put a skillet in order to use wood chunks. There was some smoke leaking around the door, but it really didn't amount to much. The flow of smoke from the bottom through the top vent was extremely sufficient. I've never cooked with gas before -- grill or smoker, so I wasn't real sure what to expect. The outside temp and wind play a much bigger role in this unit than what I was accustomed to on the charcoal grill/smoker. I was able to put up a small piece of plywood to keep wind from blowing directly into bottom vent. Top temperature I got to was 275 with outside temp at 45+/-. This was fine since I only wanted 225 for smoking Boston butts. I cooked ribs a few days prior with a warmer outside temp (65 +/-) and initially ran the cooker up to 350. When assembled, I could get it up to 400 degrees with outside temp of 75. All that said, the temperature was easy to control and it held steady at 225 and 250 depending on what I needed at the time. You can't put meat in this unit, turn on the burners, and walk away. You'll need to check on it for adding wood chips, checking cooking temps, ...etc. There have been reviews upset about having to tend to this. This is not a commercial smoker. It's a metal box with a door, a window, and a propane burner at the bottom. It is not a commercial cooker. If you don't want to spend some time during the cook, you should probably just go buy your bbq and ribs from your local BBQ restaurant. The is a great smoker for the money!
I have had this grill for over a year and it is the best grill I have ever owned. The smoker works great. It takes a few times to figure out the correct combo of charcoal and wood to keep the temperature where you want it. The gas grill keeps even temperatures. Just make sure you clean the grill plates(not grates) after each cookout to prevent flame ups. Definitely buy the grill cover. I have no rust at all.
Found grill online at good price..service was great!!
Picked up this smoker fully assembled 3 days ago & seasoned the smoker the next day. Loaded up some char-broil lump charcoal into the firebox and smoked some ribs & chicken the next day. Temperatures remained constant at 225 degrees for well over 3 hours and all sides of my meat took in the pecan smoke flavor. Not that heavy either to load into the back of my pickup also. My meat came out very juicy but with am amazing outside bark from the smoke.
Love this smoker, kept temp very well for at least 2 1/2 to 3 hrs at 250, cooked chicken, ribs, sausages, and brisket at one time with great turn out I recommend this item!!!!
Bought this smoker for Memorial Day Weekend I am new to smoking meats I have used it 2 times and everything turned out great, smoked pork and beef ribs and turkey legs. Great smoke taste. Excellent product and very good price from Academy Sports
NICE SMOKER HOLDS THE TEMPERATURE SPOT ON FOR SMOKING WELL BUILT UNIT VERY HAPPY WITH IT
I have had this unit for 4 years and it held up ok. The unit was easy to use and great value, however 3 months in the built in thermo.. broke.. 1 year in the wood tray started to rust away... 2 years in the ignighter section fell apart.... 3 years in the knob broke for the temp and finally it decided to go up in a blaze of glory today when the regulator decided to fail open full. Never smoke with this unit unattended.
I bought it a couple days before the Super Bowl. I am brand new to smoking. I did a brisket, a pork butt, and a whole lot of chicken drums. The food that was produced was comparable to the top notch BBQ places around Austin!! Truly impressed as were all my guests. The only draw back was the chip pan. IT is a horrible design. I put my wood chunks, not chips, in a cast iron skillet and sat that on top of the chip pan that came with unit, worked perfectly!!
Electric meat smokers from Masterbuilt and Cajun Injector can be kept inside and provide precise tools to dial in and get that smoky taste just right. On-board control panels simplify the process of controlling the temperature and the level of smoke, and most electric smokers even have a window so you can keep an eye on the meat without having to open the smoker.
For a classic flavor, charcoal smokers, propane smokers and water smokers offer an analog alternative to electric smoking, using natural materials to produce a rich, smoky flavor. Kingsford and Brinkmann models are easy to load are sure to help get the meat to the right level of smokiness and tenderization.
Smoker grill hybrids are great for outdoor cooks who like to multitask and who like preparing a variety of different foods. Keep an eye on grill heat with a built-in temperature gauge and cook each piece of food to perfection. Cooking grates in both the smoker and grill help simplify cleanup. When preparing for a big outdoor feast for friends and family, a smoker grill becomes an essential tool for success.
