I have bought 3 reels and one rod so far and looking to get one more reel to complete my new fishing ensemble. I have not had the chance to try them yet but if they perform like they look then I will have gotten a very good set-up for all my fishing needs. Penn is extremely fast with their shipments and very friendly to talk with pertaining to any help you can ask them for. Very satisfied so far. Proud to be an American.
Put this reel through some sharks and big reds, handled em great. Smooth drag.
Abu STX is my go to reels. Very durable and light. Never had any issues with these reels. I keep them maintained and they never fail. Wouldn't have anything else on my deck.
I own 4 of these reels , one reel is a first generation, the other three are second generation reels. I have fished with these reels the last couple years, never had a problem. They cast great, drag is excellent, I will be using these reels in the years to come. I take them apart once a year to clean them, and I use Garcia reel oil, and silicone grease this keeps them in top shape.
I bought the Battle II 6000 just over a year ago. Took it out for a big test offshore out of Venice Louisiana. The performance was impeccable. Light smooth and perfectly balanced. I was at first concerned it wouldn't not handle some of the large species we are known to catch off the Louisiana coast but was very pleased and impressed with the smooth performance and the drag power. Put it on a Penn Battle II 7' fast action rod and pulled in large snapper, amberjack, king and even a 125# shark with ... no problem. After that trip I went out and bought the battle II 3000 for inshore trout and redfish and black drum. The 3000 performed great on 2 30+ lb black drum. Been fishing 40 years now and these are by far my favorites. I'm a Penn man for life! Hitting Venice with them again this July for big Tuna. Can't wait to put it to the test!
I currently own 4 of these reels, including an older Battle that is about 4 years old now and they have never let me down. Minimal maintenance is all that is required and these reels have tackled everything from sheepshead to mahi to large sharks. I own lots of other more expensive reels and these are the best spinning reel for the money on the market. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
This reel out performs many higher end reels that are much more expensive. It has plenty of torque, it casts like a dream, and the bent handles provide maximum comfort. The reel is incredible, but the only complaint that I have (and the reason that I gave it 4 stars rather than 5) is that it isn't available in higher gear ratios. A 5.4:1 may be great to some people, but it is a little too slow for me, even with cranking. My advice is that if you know that you are comfortable with a 5.4:1, ... definitely purchase this reel as it is fantastic in every other aspect. However, if you are used to fishing reels in the 6-7 gear ratio range, be prepared for a much slower retrieval. I wish Abu would make them in higher gear ratios. If they had this same reel available in a 6.4:1 or a 7.1:1, I would buy several more of them.
I bought this a little while ago and straight out of the package, I could tell that it was constructed like a much pricier reel. It's extended handles and high-end knobs make it extremely comfortable to crank. It's casting ability is ridiculous. I tied on a lipless crankbait and this thing absolutely flies. Thankfully, it has an awesome line capacity too. It almost never backlashes. In these regards, this reel is absolutely ideal for cranking. My only complaint is that it just isnt fast enough ... for me. I had read online that a 5.4:1 is a good ratio for cranking, but for me....it's just sooooo dang slow. If you know that you are comfortable with a 5.4:1, go for it! Personally, I would love it if they made it in a 6.4:1 or a 7.2:1. All in all, great job, Abu Garcia!
This reel is smooth and easy to fish with. Very good quality
I've had my Pro Max for about a year now and it is one of the best reels I've ever bought. It reels so smooth and casts even smoother. It's easy to adjust and easy to use. I have never had any problems out of it and it handles big fish amazingly. Overall great reel!!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I have had multiples of these reels and will almost certainly buy more, when I have the need. I have used them mostly for large freshwater fish, catfish to muskie to lake trout. They may not be the most prestigious of reels, but I don't buy reels to impress others, I get them to catch fish and look for the best value for the dollar and these reels are the best choice for that in my experience. I should mention that I did use these reels for commercial fishing as well, so they got some serious ... use! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I bought this for my Husband for Christmas (after tricking him into showing me the different functions on different reels until he said this was the one he wanted, all the while thinking I was buying it for his brother!) He was surprised when he opened the box and seen the reel! The day after Christmas, he put it on his 12' UglyStik, and proceeded outside to see how it casts. He is totally amazed at the precision and the ease of use of the Penn Reel. He has been fishing with his new reel at ... least 5 times since Christmas. Excellent product, and one happy fisherman husband!
I have bought so many of this type of spincast reels that are junk. NOT THE CASE HERE ! This reel is a jewel. You will be very pleasantly surprised. Look at the price. This little reel should cost at least twice this much. VERY well done Lews. I have a lot of Lews products and have been very happy with them all.
For the price, the Lew's reel is a great panfish reel!!
I have had this reel for 10 years, never a hiccup. In some cases you really do get what you pay for.
Smooth casting and easy to reel in with solid control. Definitly not a plastic toy but a quality product. I'm not too crazy about the line it came spooled with, but that was easily remedied.
This reel cast very far and is really smooth. I've had it a few weeks and caught many black bass on it so far with no issues. It came spooled with a little too much line that caused binding on the last 20 feet of a retrieve. Stripped some line off and no problems. It's a little pricey, but much better than the standard 33's.
This Lew's reel is built to throw big baits! I throw swimbaits with this reel. Excellent reel when combo with the right right.
I haven't been able to use the reel yet, but have put 40lb. SpiderWire Stealth Braid on it.
I live in Clarksville Virginia, the home of the 144 pound world record blue cat. Over the last few years I have had other types of reels. They have even broken at the gears near the spool. I regularly catch 30 to 50 pound blue cats on a regular basis. I had a couple of old Abu Garcia reels that I have used for years in salt water. Even though they are old I have depended on them and no problems. About a month ago I bought 2 C3 7000 catfish specials. Their performance is outstanding. I usually ... drift fish with 6 rods at a time. I plan to get 2 more catfish specials in the near future, that way I will have only Abu Garcia reels on my boat. Thanks for a great product!
Bought the Mach 1 Rod & Reel combo 2 years ago. Now two years later, It still runs just as smoothly as the day I purchased it. Which is saying something if you knew what all I've done with this reel. I've thrown deep diving cranks, big swimbaits, huge jigs, and everything in between on this reel, and it keeps pushing. At the moment, it's on my texas rig and frog setup, and works like a dream. The best decision you'll ever make is buying a Lew's.
Have fished with this reel several times. It's awesome. Smooth and can dial it in just right for all types of bait casting and lures.
I've been an inshore fresh and salt water angler for 20+ yrs now and this has been one of the best reels for both waters that I've owned. I currently have 4 of these reels and it gets the nickname "The Tractor" because it doesn't matter what fish is on the end whether it be a 2-3lb bass or a 10-15lb red, its going to keep pulling until that fish is landed. This is one of the rare situations where you get a lot more reel than than what the price tag shows.
Best all around reel. If you like round reels. Hands down.
I took a chance and glad I did. I've been using the heck out of this and it just keeps on working without a hitch. Might turn out to be the best one I've ever had. Easy to cast, will cast a mile and only a couple of small back lashes. You'll get used to it in 10 minutes, go ahead buy one. I'm thinking of getting a couple more!
I bought this reel 2 days ago and brought it out onto the wakulla river and it handled great. It casts smooth and reels smooth with a nice drag. The "rocket clutch" switch is very helpful when your other hand is full. All in all this reels is a very good reel for 50 bucks.
Very Smooth operation and works just as great as higher-priced competitors. I would recommend this to anyone!
The drag. It doesn't provide consistent resistance. On every pull, there seems to be a few inches that have easier 'give'. Other than that, the reel performs better than expected, given the cost.
This is a great reel and cast far. But if you can spare a few more dollars do yourself a favor and get the pro version. This comes with the knob/switch that lets you adjust the brake system a little better. This reel doesn't have that option, everything that needs to be adjusted needs to have the plate off first. But other then that good reel for the price!
If you want something dependable that will last go for the Lew's brand $100 and up. This reel gets the job done, it cast far and it's smooth, but if you can fork out a little bit more money get the tournament pro series!
This reel casts a mile and retrieves very smoothly. I love the grip on the handle. My wife has already tried to lay claim to this one so I'll be buying her one soon
I bought this reel last Friday and took it to the bay the next day and I love this reel!! I adjusted the braking system the way the manual said by weight and it cast perfect and I don't even have to use my thumb at the end of the cast! It's very smooth and has very nice clicking drag star and clicking spool tension knob for fine adjustments. It was a very windy day and I had no problems casting into the wind after following the manual. I will be buying another one soon. This now my go to bait casting reel.
Very good buying experience and happy with purchase
