Being new to bait casting I spent quite a bit of time researching a number of different reels before deciding on this one. So glad I did as it was very easy to set up and use after some backyard practice. Watching a number of how to videos on YouTube was very helpful and I highly recommend newbys to do so
I own 7 of these reels with various gear ratios and I will not buy any other brand after using these reels. I've tried diawa, shimano, Lewis and others and none of them yet have impressed me like these reels have. They cast great, flip great and the drag on these reels is unbeatable. I have yet to have a problem with one of them and have owned them for at least 5 years. I fish regularly and tourneys and the SX has yet to let me down. They are all I wil use. I have caught many fish on the surf in all kinds of crazy weather. Not one problem.
I currently own 4 of these reels, including an older Battle that is about 4 years old now and they have never let me down. Minimal maintenance is all that is required and these reels have tackled everything from sheepshead to mahi to large sharks. I own lots of other more expensive reels and these are the best spinning reel for the money on the market. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
This reel out performs many higher end reels that are much more expensive. It has plenty of torque, it casts like a dream, and the bent handles provide maximum comfort. The reel is incredible, but the only complaint that I have (and the reason that I gave it 4 stars rather than 5) is that it isn't available in higher gear ratios. A 5.4:1 may be great to some people, but it is a little too slow for me, even with cranking. My advice is that if you know that you are comfortable with a 5.4:1, ... definitely purchase this reel as it is fantastic in every other aspect. However, if you are used to fishing reels in the 6-7 gear ratio range, be prepared for a much slower retrieval. I wish Abu would make them in higher gear ratios. If they had this same reel available in a 6.4:1 or a 7.1:1, I would buy several more of them.
Awesome reel! I use it for just about everything (big cranks, deep cranks, squarebills, swimjigs, swimbaits, big swimbaits, chatterbaits, etc.) This is the second one I bought
I have fished with ABU GARCIA reels for 60 plus years , and no reel ever made can take the wear and tear of a ABU GARCIA .I have friends that tell me all the time look at my new reel ,I tell them if they had bought a ABU GARCIA their old reel would still be as good as new . I fish ,and all of my reels are ABU GARCIAS , How can you make a great reel better . they try to copy it but never have. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I've had my Pro Max for about a year now and it is one of the best reels I've ever bought. It reels so smooth and casts even smoother. It's easy to adjust and easy to use. I have never had any problems out of it and it handles big fish amazingly. Overall great reel!!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I have had multiples of these reels and will almost certainly buy more, when I have the need. I have used them mostly for large freshwater fish, catfish to muskie to lake trout. They may not be the most prestigious of reels, but I don't buy reels to impress others, I get them to catch fish and look for the best value for the dollar and these reels are the best choice for that in my experience. I should mention that I did use these reels for commercial fishing as well, so they got some serious ... use! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I bought my original 209 and 309 about 40 years ago! Although I've added considerably more expensive reels to my arsenal since then, these are still my fallback reels. In fact, I use them regularly in both fresh and saltwater! These reels are indestructible and 100% reliable, 100% of the time. You can pay much, much more, but IMHO you won't find a better heavy-duty level-wind reel for the money.
After retiring from the Army, and getting back to good fishing waters, I needed to upgrade my 20 year old gear with some new stuff. My old Abu Garcia 6000 had been in my parents garage for 20 years, and looked a bit rough. I was looking at buying a C4 6600 for striper and catfish. I have always loved the power handles, so when I saw the C3's with the Striper and Catfish Specials, that grabbed me quickly. I bought a C3 Catfish first, mainly because the orange matched the rod I wanted it on ... better than the red. After I got it, the first day fishing with it, I was SOLD! I bought 2 more, another C3 Catfish, and a C3 Striper. The smoothness, the casting ability, it was spot on. Also, when you DO buy one of these, pick up the neoprene reel protectors. I have them on all my AG's now.
I don't write reviews. But this reel is so good I had to do it. If you catfish for bigger cats, buy this reel. Nothing compares.
This is a great deal. I was kind of skeptical with the break sistem but trust me. There's no way of getting backlash with this reel. Smoth operation as well. Shimano made a good quality reel for a reasonable price.
Works great. Excellent purchase. Would recommend this highly.
This reel replaced two spin cast reels. One lite and one ultra lite. With 6lb line on all three and 1/8oz and 1/4oz jigs I get longer smoother casts with the bait cast reel. It has all the features of the large round casting reels I use. This is a big plus. This reel was the best choice for me for crappie fishing. If anyone is interested in a casting reel for crappie fishing they should check this reel out.
I've been an inshore fresh and salt water angler for 20+ yrs now and this has been one of the best reels for both waters that I've owned. I currently have 4 of these reels and it gets the nickname "The Tractor" because it doesn't matter what fish is on the end whether it be a 2-3lb bass or a 10-15lb red, its going to keep pulling until that fish is landed. This is one of the rare situations where you get a lot more reel than than what the price tag shows.
Very tough saltwater reel, will hold up for years without serious problems
strong hold up big fish good reel holds good amount to line
This reel is the backbone of the Penn all purpose saltwater line in my opinion. Quality build, easy to service and repair. Smooth drag and indestructible. Have had mine, (2 of them), for over 15 years and are still as reliable today as the day I bought them. Use them for trolling, kingfish, dolphin, sailfish and grouper as well as conventional bottom fishing for grouper, black bass, grunts, snappers and the "reef donkey" amberjacks. Highly recommend these reels if you want a reliable, all ... purpose reel that you can depend on for years to come. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I have many Penn conventional reels, 1 x 149, 1 x 155, 1 x 285, 1 x 350, 1 x 309M, 1 x 500, 2 x 60, 2 x 65, 2 x 66, 3 x 67, 7 x 68, 1 x 112H, 1 x 113H, 2 x 113HLW, 7 X 114H, 2 x 115L. The lighter ones, from 155 to 113H, are easy casting (with 30# to 50# mono) from pier, shore, etc. yet they are very strong against fish up to 150# range. Thanks to the low gear ratio, like the 5-ton truck transmission, you can slowly winch in the big fish with these small reels. The heavier 114H and 115L ... are very versatile, with the new braided lines, you can spool from 800 to 1300 yards of 100 lb Spectra braids. I have used the 114H to bring in fish from 10 lb to 450 lb, and have used the 68 for 2 lb to 150 lb fish. That was why I have 7 of each, the true American workhorses that last for very long time, if you maintain them properly. The reason I only give 4 stars is the weaker drag force designed for these Penn reels.
I bought this about three weeks ago and has have some heavy use since bought. This thing is amazing for the price. It cranks fast and casts a country mile. Backlashes are unknown with this thing, its amazing.
My reel is very smoothe and reliable. In 30 hours of fishing, it has performed accurately 100% of the time!
Originally I bought three Nascis and had problems with the internal gears making noises.Replaced with Stradics and they are worth the extra money. You can't go wrong with this reel.
I bought this reel when it had just come out. Hands down one of the best reels I have ever used. You can never go wrong with Shimano, especially the stradic.
I have been fishing the Gulf coast for over 20 years and this is by far the best reel I have ever used. It casts great, has an awesome drag system, and as smooth as butter on warm toast. The quality of this reel is way above the other highend saltwater baitcasters.
Nicer (and lighter) than a most of my other more expensive reels. Palms really well. Super smooth cast and retrieve. Will be buying a Concept C or E as my next purchase!
Picked one up little over a year ago now have 11. Traded all my old reels in. Better than most reels priced twice as much. Smooth, light and tough as nails plus a 3 year warranty it doesn't get any better.
This reel feesl amazing the hands. It reels smooth cast great and catches big fish. I have 7 of these reels and have had no issues.
I've been bass fishing my entire life and this reel outshines all the Shimanos, AbuGarcias, etc. that I own. Lew's outcasts the others and is the smoothest I've ever had. Yes, I had the opportunity to catch an 11 lb. 2 oz. on it and the drag worked flawlessly. If you want a great reel for a reasonable price, I strongly suggest this reel. I also love the contoured non-slip handle it comes with. I'll be buying another one soon.
I bought this a month ago and I am in love with this reel
The first fish I hooked I didn't have the drag tight enoung. The reel backspooled loosing the knob, reel came apart and fell in the water Lucky for me it was shallow and I retrieved it. Make sure the assembly knob and the drag are tight. After getting it set up correctly it has been a great reel.
This reel has been great! I have not only caught crappie on it but many other species of fish such as bass, bluegill, and even a catfish. The drag system is pretty good and easy to use and it works well with a sensitive rod.
Two things I really like about this reel is the rear drag and the casting lever. the cast button lever makes it easy to cast by opening the bail and holding the line against the lever with your index finger, the rear drag is easy to reach for any adjustments needed.
Bought this reel for the $13 price and was impressed the first and second times I took the reel out. I have it on a Shakespeare 5' 10" Medium action Ugly Stik. I use this setup for crappie and bass with 12 lb line and it works great!! So smooth to operate and so light! I can open the spool with one hand and cast witht he one finger spool latch release. Very handy. I will buy another at this price!
