I put this reel throw the test, with 65lb spiderwire and hold on, it will move your feet if drag is tight , with 35lbs lock down
I've been using penn reels my entire life. Using them inshore, from the surf, and in the ocean. They are extremely corrosion resistant and are sealed pretty well. My only complaint is that water can get into the drag and other components at times. Fortunately they are very easy to service at home. All of the features are great and the new model handles braid very well. Can't beat this reels reliability in saltwater for the price! Will continue to buy these reels for my boat. Abu STX is my go to reels. Very durable and light. Never had any issues with these reels. I keep them maintained and they never fail. Wouldn't have anything else on my deck.
A friend of mine let me use one of these reels and it didn't take me long to figure out that I was in need of an update to my gear. I purchased a couple of these reels and was in business the only problem was once you use these reels your not going to use your old favorites.these reels are so light and smooth it isn't a workout to tourney fish anymore. These reels allow you to stay in touch with your baits witch in turn puts more fish in the boat. All I can say is less fatigue more fish in the ... boat. Thanks for keeping me in the game.
They are all I wil use. I have caught many fish on the surf in all kinds of crazy weather. Not one problem.
I normally catfish with heavy duty bait cast reels but was in the market for something a little easier to cast in shallow water timber areas using slip bobbers and light weights. This reel was the ticket; 1st cast into timber and reeled in an 8.3 pound channel cat. Cast and retrieve are smooth as silk and what a HOSS of a reel in a small package. 12 whisker kitty's in less than 30 minutes with smallest being 4 pounds and not one glitch out of this reel. I will be purchasing additional for my arsenal.
I Bought this reel to serve as a bait reel for both fresh and saltwater fishing. I like how it has sealed bearings so I don't have to worry about that when wading in the ocean. Obviously I try my best to not get the reel wet but hey "Stuff" happens. With all that said its a nice reel however it is on the heavier side weighing in at 12.8 oz.
accidentally lost rod/reel in lake- retrieved it after 2 days on the bottom and it still works like a boss. It did need a little cleaning and grease though. Caught my all time best largemouth (8lbs) on it last summer too. Tried and true reels, my dad still uses two ambassadeurs that are over 40 years old and doesn't miss a beat. You can't go wrong with an ambassadeur!
I bought the left hand version #5601, since I'm right-handed, so I can simply cast with My right, as I would with a spinning rod/reel, and use My left hand for the retrieve. It's tough to find a high quality casting reel offering a left handed version, and ABU takes top honors with their superb round casting reels with left or right handed options. I've owned a few ABU reels prior to the recent purchase of My 5601, and one of those I bought during Summer of 1973. Availability of simple repair ... parts has kept all of My ABU reels in service to this day, though I only fish occasionally anymore, due to My advancing age. Many Thanks to ABU for crafting such fine and long-lasting fishing reels! ~DLK~
I have fished with ABU GARCIA reels for 60 plus years , and no reel ever made can take the wear and tear of a ABU GARCIA .I have friends that tell me all the time look at my new reel ,I tell them if they had bought a ABU GARCIA their old reel would still be as good as new . I fish ,and all of my reels are ABU GARCIAS , How can you make a great reel better . they try to copy it but never have. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
Does a great job for casting all but the lightest lures or baits. Mag control works great for casting into the wind or when changing the weight of the lure. Because the pro, silver and black max models feature mag control only and not centrifugal/mag controls, they are not nearly as costly as the revo, rocket, beast and mgx models, but deliver great performance and value for all but the dedicated flipping and pitching techniques. Durable, easily adjusted, light weight and smooth drag are some of ... this reels fine qualities. Try one and I think you will like.
I have been fishing the Gulf coast for over 20 years and this is by far the best reel I have ever used. It casts great, has an awesome drag system, and as smooth as butter on warm toast. The quality of this reel is way above the other highend saltwater baitcasters.
Nicer (and lighter) than a most of my other more expensive reels. Palms really well. Super smooth cast and retrieve. Will be buying a Concept C or E as my next purchase!
This reel replaced two spin cast reels. One lite and one ultra lite. With 6lb line on all three and 1/8oz and 1/4oz jigs I get longer smoother casts with the bait cast reel. It has all the features of the large round casting reels I use. This is a big plus. This reel was the best choice for me for crappie fishing. If anyone is interested in a casting reel for crappie fishing they should check this reel out.
I've used open face reels for the longest but wanted a good spincast like dad and I used back in the day. I paired this with the Ugly Stick GX2 6' Medium rod and it is a great combo. Solid, smooth reel with the strength and dependability of Ugly Stick. A $70 combo well worth it, this is my go-to now.
I bought this reel 2 days ago and brought it out onto the wakulla river and it handled great. It casts smooth and reels smooth with a nice drag. The "rocket clutch" switch is very helpful when your other hand is full. All in all this reels is a very good reel for 50 bucks.
Caught two huge reds on the first two cast using Gulp new penny shrimp. Landed both with no trouble!!
Smooth, Strong, and good looking. For only $99 this was a great buy.
I bought this reel two months ago very smooth reel great drag well worth the money reel with the same features sell for $200- $300
This reel is the backbone of the Penn all purpose saltwater line in my opinion. Quality build, easy to service and repair. Smooth drag and indestructible. Have had mine, (2 of them), for over 15 years and are still as reliable today as the day I bought them. Use them for trolling, kingfish, dolphin, sailfish and grouper as well as conventional bottom fishing for grouper, black bass, grunts, snappers and the "reef donkey" amberjacks. Highly recommend these reels if you want a reliable, all ... purpose reel that you can depend on for years to come. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
I have many Penn conventional reels, 1 x 149, 1 x 155, 1 x 285, 1 x 350, 1 x 309M, 1 x 500, 2 x 60, 2 x 65, 2 x 66, 3 x 67, 7 x 68, 1 x 112H, 1 x 113H, 2 x 113HLW, 7 X 114H, 2 x 115L. The lighter ones, from 155 to 113H, are easy casting (with 30# to 50# mono) from pier, shore, etc. yet they are very strong against fish up to 150# range. Thanks to the low gear ratio, like the 5-ton truck transmission, you can slowly winch in the big fish with these small reels. The heavier 114H and 115L ... are very versatile, with the new braided lines, you can spool from 800 to 1300 yards of 100 lb Spectra braids. I have used the 114H to bring in fish from 10 lb to 450 lb, and have used the 68 for 2 lb to 150 lb fish. That was why I have 7 of each, the true American workhorses that last for very long time, if you maintain them properly. The reason I only give 4 stars is the weaker drag force designed for these Penn reels.
I bought this reel a couple months ago I have used it a lot and have probably caught around 120 bass on it already. it casts REEL smooth and works great. backlashes are extremely rare and it is a good reel if you want something nice but dont have $200 to blow on a casting reel.
After handling many reels on display at various retailers, I stumbled across this little beauty. I had overlooked it in the past, simply because of the lower bearing count. I was hooked as soon as I picked it up and tried it. I purchased the 1500 version about a month ago and have used it MANY times since on a 6' medium action rod. Spooled with 8lb Power Pro braid, it has been smooth, light and reliable. I can't reccomend it enough!
This is my second exceler. I caught some real nice fish on my first . It is very durable,
I have bought 3 of these reels to put on crappie rods. Very smooth and looks great. If you want a very good spinning reel then this is one you should consider.
worst store I've been in yet, doubt I ever go back
Picked one up little over a year ago now have 11. Traded all my old reels in. Better than most reels priced twice as much. Smooth, light and tough as nails plus a 3 year warranty it doesn't get any better.
This is one of the lightest, most ergonomic reels on the market. Pair it with an Ardent rod and you can fish all day without wearing down much at all. Perfect for lightweight lures or weightless applications, but performs well for everything. I now own five and plan to buy more!
I bought this during the Black Friday deals and combined it with a blackout rod. I have not had a single issue with this reel. drag and the brake setting are great. hardly any backlashes with this reel. *you will always have backlashes with a baitcaster no matter how good you are. Great price as well.
This my 6th Lew's reels Having fished for over fifty years I own numerous other brands , some quite expensive. For the money you can not lose with Lew/s!
Bought two of these about 3 yrs ago, both are amazing. Extremely dependable and give you convidence bringing in your big catch, easily brings in huge drum one after another, gives bull reds no chance to run, ive dropped in saltwater(accidently) and not one problem, and casting these feel really good, and smooth.I will be buying two more this spring.
