What's your correct shoe size?
Think you know your shoe size? Let’s find out. If you’re wearing shoes right now, try and wiggle your toes up and down and see if there’s enough room to place your thumb between the end of your longest toe and the tip of the shoe. If you can, your shoes probably fit right. If not, your shoes must be pretty uncomfortable! Shoes are supposed to be comfortable, stable, and durable. But in order for them to be all that and more, you have to do your part, too. That means you’ve got to have the right fit from the start.
Choose your shoes by the way they fit, not necessarily the size. Not all vendors size their shoes the same. Just because you wear a size seven in Nike doesn't mean you'll wear a size seven in Adidas, for example.
About 80% of people wear their shoes too small. If you go up ½ size in a shoe, you'll gain about 1/6" in length and 1/6" in width.
Since the ball is the widest part of the foot, you should fit it in the widest part of the shoe. The heel should fit snugly, but not too tight. Some slip is normal in new shoes and that will decrease with wear.
There should be a thumb's width (or ½" to ¾") between the end of the longest toe and tip of the shoe.
All toes should rest on the shoe. You should be able to pinch a small crease in the leather.
You should be able to wiggle your toes up and down inside the shoe. No toe impressions should be visible on top of the shoe.
It's no secret that children's and adult feet are different. It's important to remember that when sizing shoes.
Kids
Kids' bones and muscle structures continue to develop until they're about 20 years old. If they wear shoes that don't fit properly, that can cause bunions, corns, and even permanent damage. Since a child's foot is more flexible, it easily fits into shoes that are too small without causing much discomfort. That's why you shouldn't depend on a child to tell you if their shoe fits. Children's feet grow at uneven rates. It may take five or six months to grow a full size, and then just a month later their foot may be another full size larger.
Adult
Adults' feet are more rigid that children's feet, so finding a good fit is important in order to avoid future problems. As you get older, the loss of shock absorbency is natural. So, it's essential to have shoes with the best cushioning and support. Even though your feet aren't growing anymore, they still might spread and lengthen due to weight gain and years of working and standing on your feet. |
